How to Turn Off the Camera Shutter Sound on an Android Phone: Quick Guide

It’s gone after just one “cha-chick” from the shutter on your Android phone while you’re taking a picture of the nearby squirrel. It’s supposed to sound like old-school camera shutter sounds, but it can still be annoying, and it might even sound if you turn off the Volume on your phone. Is it possible to turn off the snap sound on an Android phone? To turn off the shutter sound, you need to know what kind of Android phone you have, what brand it is, and even where you got it.

Here’s the best bet for you, depending on your situation.

Turn down the master volume.

You can find master volume buttons on Android phones. These buttons control all of the phone’s Volume, including when it rings, plays music, and even when the camera clicks. Use these master buttons to turn off the camera’s quick-clicking sounds.

Step 1: Hold pressing the Volume pressing button as you observe the volume bar on the screen decrease and eventually vanish.

Step 2: Turn down the Volume all the way. The phone will then go into vibrate mode, and most models will turn off all sounds. There should be either total quiet or vibration to turn off the shutter noise. This choice should work with many Android phones and tablets, from Google Pixel to Samsung to LG.

Step 3: When you’re done taking pictures, go back and turn up the sound. This will let you hear your phone ring.

Turn off the camera shutter sound.

But there is an easier way to do that if you want to turn off all shutter sounds full but still want to hear other sounds and alerts on your phone. You can find this step in the settings for your camera.

Step 1: To take a picture, go to the main menu on your phone and tap the Camera button.

Step 2: Find the Camera Settings. There should be a gear button near the top of the window.

Step 3: Look for a choice that says “Shutter Sound,” “Camera Sounds,” or something similar. Keep in mind that the layout might look different on your phone and OS version, but this is another setting that most Android phones have. In this case, an LG V40 ThinQ running Android 10 is used.

Step 4: Push the “Shutter sound” button to “off” to turn off all camera click sounds until you press the “Shutter sound” button again.

Turn off shutter sound temporarily (Samsung)

This method usually works with Samsung phones, but please keep in mind that not all options may be available on all Android phones and that they might not work with all OS versions.

Step 1: On your phone’s main menu, swipe down from the top to show the settings and notifications menu. Look for the Volume icon, which looks like a megaphone and will have a cut through it if sounds are turned off.

Step 2: Hold down the Volume Icon until a selection for Sounds and Vibration appears. There is a master-level shortcut window here that lets you choose between sound and vibrate. We’re looking for the Mute button, though.

In some versions of Android, you can find the Temporary Mute choice by tapping Mute. In newer versions, it’s right below it. You can use this feature to stop your phone for a certain amount of time.

Step 3: Pick a time range that works for you. For that length of time, all sounds will be muted. Many people choose this for events and meetings, but it’s also great if you want to take a lot of pictures with your phone and don’t want to hear the shutter sound.

Let’s say you have an old Samsung phone running an old version of Android (like Android 6.0 Marshmallow). Afterward, you might not see the interim choice. Instead, follow the same steps as above, and you should see an interface that only shows the Mute option.

Country Restrictions

You can’t turn off the camera-click sound in Japan and South Korea, no matter how hard you try. Shutter muting is turned off because phones sold in those markets promise privacy to keep people from recording without permission. Manufacturers and Japanese phone companies work together to make sure that phones make a unique sound when the camera is used. This is not a law. You could get around the problem by covering the speaker while recording to muffle the sound, using the headphone jack to take pictures with your headphones as a shutter, or using an Android camera app instead of the built-in Camera app. If you feel like it, give it a try.
